| The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has released exemplar items equivalent to items included in the WCED Systemic Tests. Schools and Curriculum Advisors are encouraged to utilise the exemplar items as a guide to the level of the questions that may be included in the systemic tests. Their purpose is to support teaching and learning. Thorough mastery of the concepts covered in these tasks will prepare learners for the end of year tests and also lay the foundation for higher grades. |
| Mathematics The Grade 9 syllabus covers nine (9) topics in the first term, and five (5) in each of the ensuing terms. The exemplars cover two (2) topics in the first, second and third terms and one (1) topic in the fourth term. The questions should be used as formative assessment items for the measurement of progress. In developing these exemplars, a key concept covered in each theme was identified and mathematical problems testing the learners’ understanding of the concept were developed. |
| Language The questions for language are designed to give learners insight into different questions and answers needed for learners to know what is required. The questions engage learner thinking in response to the text at a personal, literal, and inference level. If the inference level appears advanced, then teachers could explain the vocabulary simply but still discuss possible inferences with learners so that they grasp plausible meanings from the text. The exemplars have been placed on the CEMIS. Note that the English and Afrikaans versions contain the same items. In order to access them, follow the procedure below:
