| FINAL LISTS OF PRESCRIBED AND RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR LITERATURE STUDY FOR GRADES 7 TO 9 IN 2016 |
1. |
According to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for Languages in the Senior Phase (Grades 7-9), learners must undertake the "formal study of literary texts" including short stories, novels, poetry and drama. |
2. |
The attached lists of recommended books for Grades 7 to 9 literature study for 2016 are enclosed. This is intended to augment the Department of Basic Education (DBE) Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) catalogue if additional substantial texts are considered. |
3. |
The lists have been compiled for the purpose of reducing the need to purchase new books, but provision has also been made for the introduction of new titles. |
4. |
The Prescribed Book Committees have considered all recommendations and comments and amendments have been made to the provincial lists. |
5. |
Schools may use their norms and standards funds to purchase books for literature study. In order to select suitable materials, use either the attached provincial list or the LTSM catalogue of the DBE. Go to http://wced.school.za -> LTSM (CAPS textbooks) -> Gr 7-9 catalogue. Then refer to the "Component" column for "Core reader" (from page 1) or "Novel" (from page 5). |
6. |
Schools should note that the purpose of this list is to help Grades 7 to 9 language teachers with the selection of literary texts. Many texts include questions, applications and notes to support learners. For some titles there is support available on the internet. |
7. |
The study of a variety of genres including poetry, novels, short stories and drama will provide a basis for literary analysis at Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) level. The inclusion of essays in isiXhosa aims to model and thus support appropriate writing skills. |
