ANNEXURE TO THE GRADE 12 PROGRAMME OF ASSESSMENT APPEARING IN THE PRINTED LIFE ORIENTATION CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT POLICY STATEMENT (CAPS) DOCUMENT

1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued Circular S4 of 2015 as an annexure to the printed Life Orientation Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document.
2. The annexure relates to the Programme of Assessment (PoA) appearing on page 27 of the printed CAPS document.
3. According to the CAPS document, the PoA (Project) is administered in the second term but it should be submitted in the third term, as stipulated on page 29 of the CAPS document paragraph 4.5.2.

4. In terms of recording and reporting on learner performance for Grade 12, the project is recorded and reported in Term 2. This has caused an anomaly in provinces as it has been implemented differently across the system.
5. At the subject committee meetings for Life Orientation of 05 February 2015 and 10 June 2015 respectively, concerns were raised about the implementation of paragraph 4.5 regarding the PoA appearing on page 27, the interpretation on page 29 paragraph 4.5.2 and the reporting and recording of the PoA as it appears on page 33 as supported by the table below:

Term Assessment task Marks per term Year %
Recording Reporting
1 Written Task 80 100 25%
PET 20
2 Mid-year examination 80 200 50%
Project 80
PET 40
3 Final examination 80 100 25%
PET 20
Total 400 400 100%
6. Although the administration with the reporting of the Project is clear, the submission time is confusing.
7. This Curriculum Minute seeks to provide clarity that the project must be submitted and recorded in Term 2 as per paragraph 4.5.2. The annexure is also obtainable on the DBE’s website: http://www.education.gov.za under CAPS.
8. The annexure should be read in conjunction with the printed CAPS documents and the original CAPS errata issued under the Circular S11 of 2013, available on the DBE's website.
9. You are kindly requested to bring the contents of the Curriculum Minute to the attention of all Life Orientation teachers of both public and independent schools.
