1. The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) invites Grade R to 9 Language teachers to participate in the Language Solutions Conference either as presenters or participants.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this Language Solutions Conference is to provide practical examples of strategies in which language can be effectively taught.

3. Date, time and venue

The conference will take place on Tuesday, 06 October 2015, from 08:00 to 15:00, and on Wednesday, 07 October 2015, from 08:00 to 14:00, at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute, New Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River.

4. Information for presenters
4.1 Teachers interested in presenting a language lesson, a paper on language teaching or a "best classroom practice" workshop at the conference should be guided by the following:

  • The lesson, paper or "How I teach" workshop must be based on the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) Grades R to 12.

  • The lesson should teach an aspect of the language curriculum for a particular phase.

  • Conference participants should be involved in the lesson or workshop, i.e. it must be presented in an interactive way.

  • Duration: 60 minutes. Allow 5 - 10 minutes for group discussion or questions.

  • Venues will each have a data projector, interactive white board and a flipchart stand with paper. Venue furniture will be arranged to facilitate group presentations for a maximum of 30 participants per venue.

  • Presenters must prepare and submit all worksheets for the conference to CTLI. All worksheets will be collated and printed in book form. This means that presenters will not need to bring additional copies of printed material, unless participants are required to cut or fold pages of worksheets. The deadline for submitting worksheets to CTLI is five weeks before the start of the conference, 04 September 2015.

  • If possible, all material should be typed and emailed electronically. The CTLI will duplicate the material.
4.2 The conference is also looking for presenters who can share "best practices" for using information and communication technology in the teaching and learning of language in the classroom, and presenters who can provide practical examples of ways in which language (Afrikaans, English and IsiXhosa) can be effectively taught in a diverse classroom.
4.3 If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please complete the attached Annexure A and return it to Ms M Benn at fax number 086 614 5151 or email address Magdelena.Benn@westerncape.gov.za by Friday, 04 September 2015.

5. Information for participants
5.1 Teachers who would like to attend the conference as participants are requested to complete their details on the enrolment form on Annexure B.
5.2 The completed Annexure B must be returned to Ms N Salukazana at email address Nomsa.Salukazana@westerncape.gov.za or fax number 021 900 5013 / 5027 / 5162 / 086 6145559 by Friday, 04 September 2015.
