1. The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) invites Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3) teachers to participate in the Curriculum Differentiation Conference either as presenters or participants.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this Curriculum Differentiation Conference is to provide practical examples of ways in which Language (Afrikaans, English and IsiXhosa) and Mathematics can be effectively taught in a diverse classroom. A guide to differentiated lesson planning, teaching methods, learning environment and assessment will be covered to help learners who are learning at different levels.

3. Date, time and venue

The conference will take place on Monday, 29 June 2015, from 08:00 to 15:00, and on Tuesday, 30 June 2015, from 08:00 to 13:00, at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River.

4. Information for presenters
4.1 Teachers interested in presenting a Language (Afrikaans, English or IsiXhosa) or Mathematics lesson, a paper on Language or Mathematics teaching or a "best classroom practice" workshop at the conference should be guided by the following:

  • The lesson, paper or "How I teach" workshop must be based on the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) Grades R to 12.

  • The lesson should teach an aspect of the Language/Mathematics curriculum for a particular grade.

  • Conference participants should be involved in the lesson or workshop, i.e. it must be presented in an interactive way.

  • Duration: 60 minutes. Allow 5 - 10 minutes for group discussion or questions.

  • Venues will each have a data projector, interactive whiteboard and flipchart stand with paper. Venue furniture will be arranged to facilitate group presentations for a maximum of 30 participants per venue.

  • Presenters must prepare and submit all worksheets for the conference to CTLI. All worksheets will be collated and printed in book form. This means that presenters will not need to bring additional copies of printed material, unless participants are required to cut or fold pages of worksheets. The deadline for submitting worksheets to CTLI is 29 May 2015, four weeks before the start of the conference.

  • If possible, all printed material should be typed and then printed. The CTLI will duplicate the material.
4.2 The conference is also looking for presenters who can share "best practices" for using Information and Communication Technology in the teaching and learning of Language/Mathematics in the classroom.
