1. The Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) aim to produce learners that are able to collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information, a process also known as information literacy skills.
2. Information literacy is an internationally acknowledged skill that teaches learners the ability to access, retrieve, evaluate and use information from a variety of information sources to solve an issue or existing problem and complete school assignments.
3. In order to complete school and research assignments, learners need access to factually sound information resources.
4. The new online licence of the City of Cape Town Library and Information Services gives its registered library users FREE 24 hour access, seven days a week, to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. This includes interactive information that is updated regularly, and is available via the internet remotely from home as well as through all internet-enabled mobile and smart devices.
5. The Britannica service is tailored according to the educational level of the user. The service also supports those for whom English is an additional language by providing content to suit different reading ability levels.
6. The Western Cape Education Department encourages all officials, teachers and learners who are residents within the boundaries of the City of Cape Town to join their nearest public library and tap into this valuable resource.
7. For more information on how to access the Encyclopaedia Britannica, see the attached "How to guide" from the City of Cape Town.
