1. The NCS Grades R – 12 Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) will be implemented throughout all grades during 2014. Therefore, all concessions made must be aligned to the NCS Grades R – 12 prescripts.

2. One such concession was the retention of prescribed literature for Home Language (HL), First Additional Language (FAL) and Second Additional Language (SAL), which circulars S8 of 2012, S2 of 2010 and S2 of 2009 address.

3. With the implementation of CAPS in 2014, this concession creates an anomaly for poetry in the Home Languages as the CAPS prescribes 12 poems, compared to the 15 that the concession would retain.

4. This minute aligns the Home Languages concessions, stated in the cited circulars, to the CAPS prescripts. The list of twelve (12) poems retained for the National Senior Certificate Examinations November/December 2014 and February/March 2015 for each Home Language is attached for your attention. Please take note that the status quo remains for other genres in Home Languages.

5. Furthermore, circulars S8 of 2012, S2 of 2010 and S2 0f 2009 remain in force for all the First Additional Languages for the National Senior Certificate Examinations in November/ December 2014 and February/March 2015.

6. Grade 12 literature setworks and examination requirements for official Second Additional Languages in the National Senior Certificate.
6.1 Please take note that candidates sitting for the National Senior Certificate Examinations, at Second Additional Language level in November/December 2014 and February/March 2015 will be required to write on two of the five short stories for 40 marks (2x20 – contextual questions on two short stories), as per the CAPS for official Second Additional Languages.
6.2 While Circular S8 of 2007 will still provide guidance to Provincial Education Departments on how to select and prescribe short stories for Second Additional Languages, the only amendment to Circular S8 of 2007 is that candidates will be tested on two of the five stories, instead of one as stated in Circular S8.

7. The literature part for the Second Additional Languages is still located in Section D of Paper 1: Language in Context and Literature.

8. Should you experience any difficulty in accessing the documents do not hesitate to contact the curriculum advisor for languages at your district office.

9. You are kindly requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all language teachers.
