1. The Annual National Assessments (ANA) are scheduled to be written from 16 to 19 September 2014 by all ordinary public schools, state subsidised independent schools and certain special schools.

2. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has developed assessment guidelines for each grade and subject (Language and Mathematics) that outline the minimum curriculum content that must be covered by all learners prior to the writing of the tests.

3. The assessment guidelines set the scope of work that should be covered by all learners prior to the writing of the tests for each grade and subject. The 2014 assessment guidelines have been designed in line with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS).

4. The tests will cover work that is prescribed for the first three terms of the school year. It is important to note that the ANA 2014 assessment guidelines do not imply that the delimited scopes are all that should be taught and learnt during the school year.

5. Teachers are expected to use these assessment guidelines together with other resources for their teaching and assessment programmes.

6. These guidelines have been distributed in compact disk format to the education districts and have been placed on the Western Cape Education Department Curriculum Development website. To access the guidelines please go to:
