1. The Annual National Assessments (ANA) are scheduled to be written by Grades 1 to 6 and 9 learners from 16 to 19 September 2014 by all public ordinary schools, state subsidised independent schools and certain special schools.
2. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has produced 2014 Grade 9 exemplar questions that are aligned to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy (CAPS) for English Home Language, English First Additional Language, Afrikaans Home Language and Mathematics.
3. These exemplar questions are not tests, but a variety of questions that schools can use to assist learners to prepare for the ANA. It is recommended that teachers select exemplar questions that are relevant to the planned lesson at any given time.
4. The range of exemplar questions in each subject also reflects the scope of subject content that must be covered for the 2014 ANA.
5. To access the exemplar questions on the website, go to http://www.wcedcurriculum.westerncape.gov.za/ and
click on "Assessment Management",
select "GET Assessment" from the drop-down list,
click on "Annual National Assessments",
click on "Annual National Assessments 2014", and then
click on "ANA 2014 Exemplars".
6. In addition, each public ordinary school offering Grade 9 will be provided with a copy of the CD containing the 2014 exemplar questions through the Assessment Co-ordinator in the education district.
7. Senior curriculum planners and curriculum advisers are expected to assist teachers to use the exemplar questions to develop their learners’ confidence for the writing of the ANA.
8. Principals are kindly requested to bring the content of this minute to the attention of the Grade 9 Language and Mathematics teachers and the Subject Heads concerned.
