As part of the drive to improve the life chances of the nation's children and to broaden their participation in school enrichment programmes, the Department of Basic Education and the nine provincial education departments will be organising the South African Schools' Choral Eisteddfod for both primary and secondary schools in 2013. |
2. |
However, the WCED has decided that, for logistical and safety reasons, the winners of the provincial competition in the Foundation Phase section will not travel beyond the borders of the Western Cape Province. |
3. |
Principals must ensure that rehearsing for the eisteddfod must in no way interfere with the academic programme of the school. Learners are entitled to receive a sound, uninterrupted education at all times. |
4. |
The Eisteddfod makes provision for soloists, ensembles and school choirs in the following sections:
- Foundation Phase
- Intermediate Phase
- Senior Phase
- Further Education and Training Band
|
5. |
Music pieces have been prescribed for all sections. |
6. |
Elimination rounds will be held during April and May in an education district or cluster context, depending on the number of schools entering for the eisteddfod. |
7. |
The dates for the elimination rounds will be announced by cluster or district co-ordinators by no later than the 15 March 2013. |
8. |
The winning Foundation Phase-, Intermediate-, Senior- and FET choirs and soloists will be invited to take part in the provincial finals, which will be held from 24 to 26 May 2013. |
9. |
The music scores can be downloaded from the WCED website at www.curriculum-dev.wcape.school.za

All school choirs are encouraged to participate in the eisteddfod. To enter, please complete the attached registration form and fax or e-mail it by 31 March 2013 to the official at your district office responsible for school enrichment, using the relevant fax number or e-mail address below.

The WCED has decided to place more emphasis on careful financial management at all levels of the system as from 2013, but primarily in schools. The department therefore requires schools to adhere to the correct financial controls and procedures and to submit appropriate business plans to justify the need for expenditure. District co-ordinators will communicate these measures and procedures to schools in their respective districts. |
12. |
Further communication will be conducted via district co-ordinators. Winning schools that represent the Western Cape at national level will receive specific information and guidance from the district office and provincial coordinators. |

Please bring the content of this minute to the attention of all school choir directors. |
