1. |
In a letter dated 13 March 2013, Umalusi informed all independent schools about policy on the accreditation of independent schools. |
2. |
The policy approved by the Minister of Basic Education and published in the Government Gazette No. 35830 on 29 October 2012, makes it compulsory for all independent schools to be accredited with Umalusi. |
3. |
The Western Cape’s provincial Regulations Relating to the Registration of and Subsidies to Independent Schools (excluding Independent Pre-primary Schools) state the following under Section 2 (2)(h):
|
The owner of an independent school must ensure that … (iii) after registration, the independent school applies for accreditation with Umalusi;
|
|
4. |
All registered independent schools are therefore reminded that Umalusi requires them to apply for accreditation. Umalusi policy states that a school which is not accredited will have its registration as an independent school, withdrawn by the provincial education department. |
5. |
The Western Cape Education Department is in the process of amending the Regulations so that they comply with this policy. |
6. |
The process to be followed when applying for accreditation is set out in the attached Addendum A. |
8. |
We encourage all independent schools who have not yet applied for accreditation to do so without delay. |
9. |
Kindly bring the content of this minute to the attention of all concerned. |
