As you are aware, the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) Annual National Assessments (ANAs) will be conducted in September 2013 and the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) Systemic Tests in October 2013. The WCED is committed to supporting teachers and learners in preparing for these tests. |

The following preparation strategy is suggested for these tests: |

Teachers should download the exemplar tests for both the ANAs and Systemic Tests from the WCED website, using the procedures set out below.

| 2.2 |
Teachers should familiarize themselves with the different test items and the mark allocations in the marking memoranda. |
| 2.3 |
Teachers should ensure that learners practise the various items so that learners become familiar with the different types of questions and are able to work independently. |
| 2.4 |
Schools may also set similar tests, based on the types of questions found in the exemplars. For such tests, the classroom should be prepared as if for the day of the real test. It is also recommended that teachers swop classes to re-enact the real test environment. SMT members could monitor the procedure to ensure maximum effectiveness. |
| 2.5 |
Teachers should inform parents about the tests and encourage them to support their children when practising items as homework. |
| 3. |
The WCED has received reports that some teachers abandon their regular teaching plan for days or weeks on end for the sake of preparing for the ANAs or Systemic Tests. Please note that regular teaching must not be compromised by preparations for these tests and undue stress must not be placed on learners. |
