1. A Career Awareness Week is planned for 7 to 11 October 2013 to strengthen the ability of learners to make informed decisions about their future careers. This is an opportunity for Life Orientation teachers to complete the "World of Work" section of their syllabus.
2. The target group is Senior Phase learners.
3. The purpose of the Career Awareness Week is to make learners in Grades 7 to 9 aware of the importance of selecting the correct subjects in Grade 10. During this week, schools are encouraged to focus on activities that will guide learners to make informed decisions about their future careers.
4. Life Orientation teachers are encouraged to plan activities for this week that will focus on the world of work. Where possible, tasks given to learners during the course of the year could culminate in this week.
5. Grade 7

Grade 7 learners could focus on a week-long project that would culminate in a career dress-up activity. This means that learners will come to school dressed up to represent their future careers. This activity should take place during Life Orientation periods. See Annexure A for more ideas.

6. Grade 8

Grade 8 learners should focus on career activities that will enable them to recognise their own strengths, talents, limitations and abilities in particular subjects. See Annexure A for some ideas.

7. Grade 9

Grade 9 learners could participate in a career guidance exercise by using the PACE Career Exploratory Questionnaire, which is available on the PACE Career Website at www.gostudy.co.za The questionnaire should be seen as part of the process to prepare Grade 9 learners to choose the correct subjects for Grade 10. See Annexure B for guidelines on how to complete the questionnaire.

The questionnaire was designed by the PACE Career Centre for the purpose to accellerate the career maturity of learners. Results obtained from this career self- exploration exercise indicated a significant increase in the career maturity levels of participants.

Note that selected schools will receive this self-exploration questionnaire, as well as career guidance brochures. Life Orientation teachers are requested to administer the questionnaire to Grade 9 learners and to use the career guidance brochures when advising parents on subject choices for Grade 10 and future careers.
