1. Sunday, 8 September 2013 is International Literacy Day and focuses attention worldwide on the importance of literacy.
2. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) urges all schools to celebrate International Literacy Day on Monday, 9 September 2013.
3. Schools are requested to organise reading activities for all grades leading up to 9 September.
4. The WCED suggests that each learner selects a book of their choice (fiction or non-fiction) to be read over a number of days. A Daily reading record (See Annexure 1 for example) will guide each learner in the number of pages to be read each day. This will be determined by the teacher. Learners may, of course, read more than one book and these should be listed on a Book monitoring form (See Annexure 2 for example), which is monitored by the teacher.
5. The reading activity should culminate on 9 September 2013 in learners sharing with others what they have read, as well as writing a summary of the book they have read. The use of class- and school-based incentives are encouraged for learners who have shown initiative in this regard.
6. Principals are kindly requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all Language teachers of Grades R to 9.
