1. Each school will be receiving two booklets in English, titled Money in Action, for teachers of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) for Grades 7-9. The booklets have been provided by the Financial Services Board and are accompanied by a poster, detailed lesson plans, and activity sheets and marking memoranda on selected topics in the EMS syllabus, as contained in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), Grades 7-9.

2. These materials should be regarded as a supplementary teaching and learning resource, to be used when dealing with the following topics in EMS:

The economy: Basic needs and wants, government revenue
Financial literacy: Personal savings, business budget, source documents, CRJ, credit transactions
Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurs’ Day budget, factors of production, sectors of the economy, functions of a business
3. The resource has been prepared in accordance with the Annual Teaching Plan, as contained in the EMS CAPS, so that it can be incorporated into classroom teaching. Each of the lesson plans provides the topic, sub-topics, term and week (as contained in the Annual Teaching Plan), class activities and marking memoranda. It is also hoped that this resource will be used as a model for teachers when designing their own EMS lessons.

4. Distribution of the Money in Action resources to all ordinary public primary and high schools in the Western Cape will take place during September 2013. Kindly contact your district’s EMS curriculum adviser should you have any queries.

5. The Financial Services Consumer Foundation acknowledges the contribution of the following to the production and reviewing of the Money in Action resource:

  • Officials from the Department of Basic Education
  • Staff of the Consumer Education Department at the Financial Services Board
  • The South African Insurance Association
  • The Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation
6. Principals are requested to bring the content of this minute to the attention of all EMS teachers at the school.
