1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is offering lessons broadcast, via the interactive telematics platform (lessons beamed via satellite technology from the University of Stellenbosch), during the period 8 May to 31 October 2013. The lessons, conducted by experienced teachers, will be broadcast live to the 145 selected schools in the eight education districts of the Western Cape from 15:00 to 17:00 on certain weekdays.

2. Lessons in the following National Senior Certificate subjects will be broadcast:

  • Mathematics
  • Physical Sciences
  • Accounting
  • Geography
  • Life Sciences
  • English HL
  • Afrikaans HL
3. The attached Annexure A provides the WCED's timetable of lessons.

4. Each of the 145 schools will receive learner support material for the subjects offered. (See list of schools in the attached Addendum B.) The support material will be delivered to the education district offices and will be distributed to schools from there.

5. The presenters are lead teachers chosen for their expertise in their subjects.

6. Subject teachers at each school will be expected to manage and monitor learning during the live broadcasts.

7. Since lessons are conducted after school hours during the week, it is imperative that principals discuss arrangements with the parents of Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners, and also their governing bodies.

8. The attendance of learners will be regularly monitored by Head Office and district officials.

9. Principals will be expected to report weekly on attendance by learners, as well as successes or difficulties experienced with the programme.

10. DVDs of the broadcasts can be purchased at a nominal price by calling EDUMEDIA at tel. no. 021 689 9536. Resource material is also available on the WCED’s website at http://curriculum-dev.wcape.school.za

11. A recent development in telematics teaching is the addition of the Northern Cape Education Department, who are offering support to their Grade 12 learners. All the lessons offered by them can be viewed by the WCED’s 145 project schools. Their timetable is attached as Annexure C. Attendance at these lessons is optional since no hard copies of the support material will be provided to WCED schools. However, the electronic versions of these lessons will be posted on the WCED’s Curriculum Development website for downloading.

12. We look forward to continue this interesting project with you.

13. Should you have any queries about this initiative, please feel free to contact Walter Mercuur at tel. 021 467 2630 or e-mail address walter.mercuur@westerncape.gov.za

14. Principals are requested to bring the content of this minute to the attention of the relevant staff, Grades 10, 11 and 12 learners and their parents or guardians.
