1. On 12 September 2011, the national Department of Basic Education published the Government Gazette No. 34600, which announced that the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) comprises the following documents:

  1. The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for all approved subjects for Grades R - 12 (CAPS)

  2. The National Policy Pertaining to the Progression and Promotion Requirements of the NCS Grades R – 12

  3. The National Protocol for Assessment
2. Gazette 34600 stipulated that CAPS for the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase will be implemented as follows:

  • 2012: Grade 10
  • 2013: Grade 11
  • 2014: Grade 12
3. This minute serves to inform schools and education district offices of the Western Cape Education Department’s plan for the orientation of Grade 12 teachers.

4. Grade 12 teachers will be orientated in the CAPS in their education districts. Dates and venues will be arranged by the district offices.

5. However, orientation sessions for the following subjects will be arranged and conducted by Head Office:

Arts subjects
Engineering subjects
Information Technology
Agricultural subjects

6. Additional orientation sessions, in the form of subject content training, will be arranged by the Directorate: Curriculum FET (Head Office). Teachers will be invited before 30 April 2013 to these sessions.

7. The subject content training sessions will be conducted by the senior curriculum planners, in collaboration with curriculum advisers, during the second week of the June/July school vacation, from 1 to 5 July 2013.

8. Please bring the content of this minute to the attention of all Grade 12 teachers.
