1. The Commonwealth Secretariat, in collaboration with the British Council, has launched the Schools Online Initiative.
2. The purpose of this initiative is to provide teaching resources, as well as online debates and activities between schools, to mark the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Scotland.
3. The initiative is also aimed at linking schools and children across the Commonwealth to access learning resources on various themes, to participate in online exchanges and forums, and to work on collaborative projects in inter-regional Commonwealth teams.
4. The Schools Online Initiative will afford South African teachers and learners an opportunity to share ideas and best practices with the international education community. It may also create opportunities for cultural exchanges.
5. The initiative also aims to bring the values of the Charter of the Commonwealth into the classroom and will be accessible to approximately 100 000 schools, 300 000 teachers and 17 million young people.
6. Since South Africa is a member of the Commonwealth, the Department of Basic Education will be posting the information on their website: www.education.gov.za.
7. The WCED encourages all schools to participate in this exciting initiative.
8. Kindly bring the content of this minute to the attention of the teachers concerned.
