The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) aims to (i) improve the number of learners taking Mathematics, (ii) retain learners taking Mathematics, and (iii) improve learner performance in Mathematics. Various strategies have been designed to achieve these three aims. One of these is to provide incentives to schools who contribute to achieving these 3 aims in the FET phase. |

Dinaledi Main and Incentive Schools demonstrating an improvement in learner numbers, retention and performance in Mathematics in the FET phase will receive a cash award. The indicative amounts to be awarded depend on the number of schools and learners qualifying. The available budget will be finally disbursed when the qualifying schools and learners are known. Awards will be based on the following criteria:

Increased number of learners taking Mathematics An increase of more than five learners in the number of learners entering the FET phase and taking Mathematics, in comparison with the previous year’s Grade 10 enrolment, will be rewarded as follows:
0 – 5 learners 6 – 10 learners 11 – 20 learners 21 – 30 learners More than 30 learners |

(ii) |
Retention of learners offering Mathematics As regards the retention of learners offering Mathematics in the FET band over a period of three years, the incentives will be based on the number of learners writing Mathematics in the final Grade 12 examinations in 2012, as compared with the number who took Mathematics in Grade 10 in 2010. The scale below will determine the awards.
50% - 60% 61% -70% 71% - 80% 81% - 90% 91% - 99% 100% or more |

(iii) |
Improved performance in Mathematics An increase of more than five learners in the number of learners achieving a 50%+ pass in Mathematics in the 2012 Grade 12 final examination. The awards will be made as follows
