1. The Department of Basic Education has issued Circular E18 of 2012 on literature prescribed for the Senior Certificate (Report 550) language examinations in 2013 and 2014. Circular E18 of 2012 replaces Circular E13 of 2012.

2. Circular E18 states that candidates who will sit for the Senior Certificate (Report 550) examinations in 2013 and 2014 will write on the literature prescribed for the National Senior Certificate examinations.

3. The list of prescribed literature and information on the format of each Literature paper are attached as Annexures A and B respectively.

4. The number of prescribed works has been streamlined as follows:
4.1 First Language Higher Grade and Standard Grade (all 3 genres must be studied):

  • 4 Poems
  • 2 Dramas (Choose one)
  • 2 Novels (Choose one)
4.2 Second Language Higher Grade and Standard Grade (any 2 of the 4 genres must be studied):

  • 4 Poems
  • 2 Dramas (Choose one)
  • 2 Novels (Choose one)
  • 4 Short stories
5. As from 2013, all the Literature question papers (Paper 2) will be set by the Department of Basic Education.

6. The 2013 and 2014 Senior Certificate examinations will be based on the prescribed works listed in the attached Annexure A.

7. Please bring the content of this minute to the attention of all language teachers responsible for preparing candidates for the Senior Certificate examinations (Report 550).
