Conference theme: Teach, Apply and Live Reading and Writing

1. Invitation

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) invites

  • school principals, practicing and retired teachers of Grades R to 9, curriculum advisers, and representatives from non-governmental organisations and tertiary education to contribute papers, presentations or displays at the above-mentioned conference; and

  • Grades R to 9 teachers to participate in the conference.
2. Aims

The aims of the conference are to share ideas, best practice and experience concerning the creation of a love of reading and writing, different approaches to the teaching of reading and writing, intervention strategies for poor readers and writers, and the managing of a reading school.


3. Information for presenters
3.1 Different forms of presentations invited:

  • DVD session
  • Paper
  • Demonstration lesson
  • Display
  • Workshop sessions on reading or writing (practical activities)
3.2 Persons interested in presenting a paper, demonstration lesson or workshop at the conference are requested to note the following:

  • We will require the following information from you:
    • The title of your presentation
    • A brief description of its content (maximum one page)
    • The form your presentation will take (see paragraph 3.1 )
  • Conference participants should be involved in the presentation.
  • Duration of presentation: 60 minutes. Allow 5 to 10 minutes for group discussions or questions.
  • Venues will have portable tables and chairs, a data projector, an overhead projector, a whiteboard and flipchart stand with paper.
3.3 If you are interested in presenting an item at the conference, please complete the attached Annexure A and e-mail it to Magdalena Benn at mabenn@pgwc.gov.za or Gaynor Matthews at gmatthew@pgwc.gov.za or fax it to 021 900 5175 / 5027 / 5162 by 10 February 2012.

4. Information for participants
4.1 Teachers who would like to attend the conference as participants are requested to fill in their details on the school list on Annexure B.
4.2 The completed Annexure B must be returned to Gaynor Matthews at e-mail address gmatthew@pgwc.gov.za or fax number 021 900 5175 / 5027/ 5162.
4.3 Registration will close once the first 600 participants are registered. Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Therefore, ensure that you register as soon as possible.
4.4 The conference programme will include a plenary panel discussion and parallel sessions presented by participants. Schools registering for the conference will receive confirmation telephonically by 16 March 2012.

5. Logistics

Participants or presenters from the rural education districts travelling further than 120 km per return trip may stay overnight in the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI)'s hostel on the nights of Sunday, 25 March and Monday, 26 March 2012. Accommodation will be paid for by the WCED. Participants will travel at their own cost.


6. An information session for all presenters chosen for the programme will be held at the CTLI, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River on 15 February 2012 at 14:00.

7. The WCED hopes that this conference will be an enriching experience for all teachers of reading and writing who attend it.
