1. Circular 0006/2011 (dated 2011-03-25) notified schools of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED)'s intention to supply all Grade 10 learners at ordinary and special public schools, with a textbook per subject to support the implementation of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) in 2012.

2. An electronic version of the National Catalogue of approved Grade 10 CAPS textbooks, developed by the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) is attached. Only books on this catalogue will be purchased by the WCED for Grade 10 learners.

3. Schools must

  1. make their textbook selection for each Grade 10 subject on their approved FET curriculum;

  2. indicate the number of textbooks and teacher guides required per title, based on the projected learner enrolment and language per subject for 2012;

  3. capture their textbook selection on the automated requisition form on CEMIS by no later than 16:00 on Monday, 26 September, by following the steps below:
    Step 1: Log on to CEMIS.
    Step 2: Select the "Administration" option on the Menu.
    Step 3: Click on "CAPS GR 10 Order" on drop-down box.
    Step 4: Click on "GR 10".
    Step 5: Select a subject from the dropdown box.
    Step 6: Capture number of textbooks and teachers guides next to your selected textbook title for this subject.
    Step 7: Click on "SUBMIT".
    Step 8: Repeat Steps 5 - 7 above for each Grade 10 subject in the school's approved FET curriculum.
    Step 9: Once you are satisfied with your textbook order, complete the sign-off screen and click "SAVE".

  4. consult the CEMIS User Guide (Annexure B), available on the CEMIS "Administration" option, for clear, step-by-step instructions; and

  5. contact Zandre' Kleinschmidt at tel.no. 021 467 2204 or Lucia Bredenkamp at tel. no. 021 467 2129, should assistance be needed.
4. Design, Dramatic Arts, Information Technology, Mechanical Technology, Religion Studies, and Visual Arts, have only one approved title on the National Catalogue. For these textbooks, schools must indicate the number of books required per language version.

5. The following subjects have no textbooks on the approved National Catalogue: Music, Civil Technology, Agricultural Management Practices, Agricultural Technology and Dance Studies. Schools will be given an opportunity to order for these subjects when the DBE makes the supplementary National Catalogue available in November 2011.

6. Schools may examine copies of these approved textbooks at their district office or teacher resource centre from 14:30 to 16:30 daily, Monday to Friday.

7. The WCED will attempt to provide schools with the textbooks of their choice. However, this may not always be possible within our current budget.

8. Kindly bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all teaching staff.
