Remunerative work outside the public service can be defined as follows:
"Any other work to be performed which is not with the permanent employer, irrespective of whether there is remuneration or not"

The following are examples of such remunerative work outside the public service:
- Self-employment in own business, e.g. tuck shop, taxi service, bus service, carpentry, building, mechanical repairs
- Working for another organization, e.g. psychologist, nurse, social worker, salesperson
- Consultancy, e.g. HR partner, marketing, selling products
- Board members, e.g. auditors, foundation, directorship
- Entrepreneurship, e.g. author, writer, publisher.

The steps required when applying for permission to perform the various types of remunerated work outside the public service are set out in the following attached annexures
- Annexure A: General principles regarding applications to perform remunerated work outside the public service psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists
- Annexure B: General principles regarding applications to run a private practice (e.g. psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists)
- Annexure C: General principles regarding applications to run a private business and/or to register a closed corporation

Institution-based educators wishing to perform work outside the public service, irrespective of whether they will be receiving remuneration for that work or not, must submit an application requesting permission to do so. All applications must be recommended by the following persons:
- The principal
- The school governing body
- The circuit team manager

Institution-based public servants wishing to perform work outside the public service, irrespective of whether they will be receiving remuneration for that work or not, must submit an application requesting permission to do so. All applications must be recommended by the following persons:
- The school principal
- The school governing body
- The circuit team manager
- The district director

Office-based educators and Head Office and district office public servants wishing to perform work outside the public service, irrespective of whether they will be receiving remuneration for that work or not, must submit an application requesting permission to do so. All applications must be recommended by the following persons:
- The supervisor
- The director

Employees who currently perform remunerative work outside the public service or who intend continuing to do so, must submit their applications, requesting permission to continue doing so, by 20 January 2012 to the following address:

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by 17 February 2012.

Failure by an employee to obtain permission to perform remunerative work outside the public service will result in punitive consequences for the employee concerned. |
