1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) wishes to inform all schools with Grade 12 learners of two additional programmes to support the matrics of 2011.

2. The first is a series of television programmes on DSTV Channel 319 which will run from 4 July to 22 November 2011 as follows:

  1. Winter school - 4 to 15 July (10 days, weekdays) from 09:00 to 17:00
  2. Saturday school - 23 July to 10 September, and 15 to 22 October (10 Saturdays)
  3. Spring school - 3 to 7 October (5 days)
  4. Exam school - 19 October to 22 November (22 days)
3. The television programmes include the following:

  1. Exam paper overviews,
  2. tips for all the selected subjects,
  3. detailed worked solutions and explanations of selected past exam questions, and
  4. live phone-in sessions in the following subjects:

    • Mathematics
    • Physical Sciences
    • Life Sciences
    • Mathematical Literacy
    • Accounting
    • Geography
    • English First Additional Language
4. All broadcasts are supported by learner and facilitator guides which the WCED will purchase for learners. These books will be delivered to district offices and arrangements will be made by district directors for these to reach the learners at the schools that request them. Attached please find a PowerPoint presentation that provides detailed information about the programmes.

5. The district directors will also arrange, on request, for the broadcast of these programmes at schools with the telematics facility.

6. The second support programme involves the distribution of a 48-page newsprint booklet in English and Afrikaans containing unseen examination papers and marking memoranda in the following subjects:

7. The newsprint books will be delivered directly to schools in late August 2011 and will provide learners with an additional means of preparing for the final examinations, using examination question papers they have not encountered before.
