1. The Foundation Phase research conducted in 2010 by a team of experts from the University of Stellenbosch allowed the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to obtain a broad picture of expectations of teaching and learning in Western Cape schools.

2. The findings of the study pointed out the following areas for improvement in teaching and learning:

Use of learning and teaching support material

3. The WCED has developed a self-assessment tool that can be used by teachers and heads of department. This tool is based on our research findings and we are sure it will be useful in addressing those weaknesses. We hope you find it useful.

4. Principals are requested to bring this minute to the attention of the SMT and teachers, and to encourage teachers to use it and to discuss the results.
