1. |
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will be supplying books to all Xhosa- and Afrikaans-medium schools involved in Phase 1 of the Literacy and Numeracy Intervention. |
2. |
Each teacher/classroom will be supplied with a selection of books (fiction and non-fiction), distributed over the grades as follows:
Grade 1 = 30 books per class Grade 2 = 30 books per class Grade 3 = 20 books per class Grade 4 = 23 books per class Grade 5 = 22 books per class Grade 6 = 26 books per class
|
3. |
Each pack will contain a list of the titles, as well as suggestion to assist teachers to use these books effectively in the classroom. On receipt of the consignment, the contents must be carefully checked, each book stamped with the school stamp and the books recorded in the school's inventory.
|
4. |
The books are being supplied for the purpose of enhancing the use of English as a second language through reading for enjoyment. This means that these books may be used in the reading half-hour, during story time or for reading at home. |
5. |
These books do not replace the class reader, but augment the reading that takes place in the classroom. The books must be well looked after. The repair or replacement of these books will be the responsibility of the school as no replacements will be made by the WCED during the next 3 to 5 years. |
6. |
Principals must ensure that an inventory is kept of all the resources provided by the WCED and that a strict retrieval system is in operation. |
7. |
Whilst delivery will take place from February 2011, teacher support for the use of these books will be provided later, and details of this will follow. In the interim, please refer to the attached Annexure A for suggestions on the effective reading for enjoyment in the classroom. |
8. |
Should schools require further support, the ECD/FP curriculum advisers are able to assist. |
9. |
Principals are kindly requested to bring the contents of this minute to the notice of all teachers. |
