1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will be supplying maths kits to all schools that form part of Phase 1 of the Literacy and Numeracy intervention.
2. Every teacher/classroom from Grades 1 to 6 will be supplied with a maths kit containing a variety of manipulatives suitable for teaching Mathematics.
3. On receipt of the goods, the contents must be carefully checked, stamped and recorded in the school's inventory.
4. Teachers and learners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the contents of these kits and to use them to enhance the teaching of Mathematics.
5. The attached Annexure A provides a list of the contents of each kit supplied for the Foundation and Intermediate Phases.
6. Principals must ensure that an inventory is kept of all the resources provided by the WCED and that a strict retrieval policy is in operation.
7. Schools are requested to ensure that the maths kits are used and managed with care as no replacements will be made in the next 3 to 5 years. The repair and replacement of damaged components will be the responsibility of the school.
8. While delivery will take place from February 2011 onwards, assistance for teachers in the use of these kits will be provided when Maths Centre trainers and/or district officials visit schools. It will be expected that the kits will be intact and in good condition when the assistance is provided.
9. Principals are kindly requested to bring the content of this minute to the notice of the school management team and the teachers concerned.
