The Western Cape Education Department has produced an illustrated manual to assist teachers to conduct good lessons in Physical Education. The manual comes with a complete set of lesson plans for Grades 1 to 9 and a DVD which provides a visual demonstration of teaching methodologies used in Physical Education. |

How the material should be used |
3.1 |
The manual contains age-appropriate activities for Grades 1 to 9. Teachers can use these activities to plan their Physical Education programmes. |
3.2 |
The manual contains many illustrations of the recommended movement activities. Teachers can copy and enlarge the illustrations, and then use them to teach learners the different starting positions, body positions and terminology used in Physical Education. |
3.3 |
The manual also contains a section on the theory on which Physical Education is based. Teachers with no training in Physical Education are advised to study the sections dealing with the principles of exercise and precautions to be taken to avoid injury to learners. |
3.4 |
Teachers who have no training in Physical Education will be trained during the roll-out of National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements as from 2012. |
3.5 |
The manual contains 40-week lesson programmes for Grade 1 to 9. These must be seen as guidelines for interesting and varied programmes, with ideas for activities per week, term and year. Teachers can use these programmes as the basis for their own Physical Education programmes and adapt them to suit their teaching circumstances. |
3.6 |
The accompanying DVD provides a variety of teaching methodologies and also deals with the challenges that teachers face in Physical Education classes. |
4. |
Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all teachers of Physical Education. |
