1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in conjunction with a donor, is to run a competition which seeks to inspire young people to read for enjoyment.
2. Teachers choose 6 learners from each of their Grade 6 classes to be the representative project leaders for the Inspired to Read Project. It is suggested that the teacher first ask the class who would like to enter for the competition and then choose learners that have the best aptitude for reading. However, the teacher could choose one or two learners who are not that good at reading and the teacher could support them with the reading.
3. The names of the selected learners must be sent to Ms Lungi Ngondo at fax no 021 467 9369 in the GET Curriculum Directorate by Friday, 11 February 2011. When the books arrive at the respective schools they must be given to these selected learners.
4. The chosen learners have a certain number of days in which to read a whole book. This will roughly equate to 12 pages a day. After every reading phase the learner shares with the entire class his or her views on the book. The selected learners will also write a synopsis of no more than 500 words of what they thought was the best part of the book and it must be accompanied by a picture of their idea of Libris (the fairy island). Both the synopsis and the picture must be done on A4 sheets of paper and stapled together. Any colours may be used.
5. The teacher must collect the assignment after each phase and keep it until all the reading phases and assignments have been completed. All the assignments must be sent to the principal of the school, who will select the best assignment which, in turn, must be sent to the Curriculum component at the relevant district office, who will forward it to the WCED Head Office for judging. Please note that all 6 project leaders' entries must be sent to the WCED, via the district office, with the schools' best entry clearly labelled and placed on top.
6. If any additional information is required, please contact liam@thewhitequill.co.za or the GET co-ordinator at your district office.
7. The following prizes will be awarded:

Learner placed 1st - Amazon Kindle wireless e-book reader
Teacher placed 1st - Laptop netbook
School placed 1st - Desktop computer
