1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has appointed a service provider to deliver Grade 1-6 Literacy and Numeracy workbooks for all learners.
2. The delivery of learner workbooks is being made directly to schools. Delivery commenced on 17 January for the Western Cape.
3. These learner workbooks have been printed in all 11 languages and will be delivered according to language, learner enrolment and grades in each school. The DBE has used the latest available EMIS data provided by provinces for its allocation to each school. Grades 1-3 learners will receive literacy and numeracy workbooks in the Home Language offered at the school, whereas numeracy workbooks for Grades 4-6 will be in the language of learning and teaching at the school. In addition, Grades 4-6 language workbooks are provided in the Home Language of each school.
4. A call centre (086 136 3600) has been set up for schools to report shortages in the number of workbooks and/or incorrect language versions delivered, if any.
5. Principals are requested to complete the accompanying survey form (Addendum A) and send it to their circuit team manager by 28 January 2011. This survey form replaces a similar form that was sent by DBE. Districts will collate the information from the forms and the WCED will report to DBE.
6. The workbooks must be used in conjunction with either the WCED work schedules or the DBE lesson plans, as well as with textbooks and other resources.
7. The workbooks are consumable resources. Learners should also write in their own exercise books and use their numeracy/mathematics textbooks for classwork and homework every day.
