1. As a follow-up to the Examinations and Assessments Minute: 0001/2010, this minute serves as a reminder that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will conduct annual systemic testing of all Grade 9 learners in Language and Mathematics in October 2010.
2. The tests are scheduled for 6 - 19 October 2010, involving one day per school. All schools have been informed of their test dates via an e-mail letter and through CEMIS.
3. It should be noted that, for 2010, the Grade 9 test is a full cohort pilot study and will be conducted in all schools with 5 or more learners in Grade 9. The Grade 9 Language and Mathematics tests will mainly test the Grade 9 curriculum learning outcomes, but will also include Grades 6, 7 and 8 items, with a view to ascertaining the level at which learners perform.
4. The WCED Grade 9 Systemic Tests should not be confused with the Annual National Assessments.
5. Test items have been set and quality assured by specialists
6. The tests are diagnostic in nature and will ensure that the WCED plans and responds effectively to the difficulties schools face in these subjects. Therefore the systemic tests will not contribute to the final promotion results of the learners.
7. In order to maintain the integrity of the results, the tests will be administered externally by independent service providers.
8. Each school will receive an analysis of its learners' achievements. The intention is to give teachers and support staff an understanding of how learners are performing in terms of their language and mathematics skills and to provide appropriate support.
9. The WCED wishes to thank you for your co-operation and support.
