1. World Book Day is an annual event held on 23 April, William Shakespeare's date of birth, and is organised by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. World Book Day celebrations reflect the importance of reading for life-long learning, cognitive development and psychological well-being. The WCED encourages all schools to acknowledge the value of reading by participating enthusiastically in reading-based activities on World Book Day.
2. The theme for 2010 is: READING IS COOL
3. The WCED will be celebrating along with strategic partners, such as the Publishers' Association of South Africa (PASA), The South African Booksellers' Association (SABA), The Department of Arts and Culture, the Western Cape Provincial Library Services and the Centre for the Book (a specialist unit of the National Library of South Africa):
3.1 EDULIS will display school library/resource centre material which has recently been evaluated by the EDULIS Evaluators: Curriculum Resources, and which is recommended for purchase by schools for their libraries/resource centres:

Venue: EDULIS Seminar Room, First Floor, Middestad Mall, Charl Malan Street, Bellville
Duration of exhibition: 21-23 April (World Book Day) 2010
Visiting times: Wednesday to Friday, 10:30 to 16:00

3.2 PASA and SABA will embark on an outreach initiative whereby reading will be done at nominated schools across all provinces from 19 to 23 April 2010.
3.3 The partnership has designed and printed a colourful poster depicting the spirit of World Book Day. Posters will be made available to all schools and public libraries across the country. In the Western Cape they will be available from district resource centre staff. See paragraph 5 below for contact details.

This interim measure will be applicable until a resource centre has been established at the Metro Central District Office.
