Mark sheets for the aforementioned subjects are sent directly to curriculum advisors. Principals are to ensure that they have received all the required mark sheets.

1.2 Please note that only one copy of the mark sheets is provided for completion. It is therefore vital that a copy of the moderated mark sheets be made by the school and kept for record purposes.
1.3 Please ensure that the moderation schedules are completed and available to the curriculum advisers (CA's) on the day of moderation. Subject teachers must only fill in the unmoderated mark in the "Mark" column.
1.4 Only after final moderation of each subject, should moderated marks be transferred to the school-based assessment (SBA) mark sheets by the curriculum adviser into the "mod" column.
1.5 Should your school receive the computerised SBA mark sheets only after the moderation process, the necessary arrangements should be made with the CA for the completion of the mark sheets.

2. AWARDING OF SBA MARKS

A mark must be awarded to each candidate whose examination number appears on the mark sheet. This also applies to candidates who

  • were expelled or temporarily suspended from school.
  • have applied for a change of centre.
  • were absent for a prolonged period during the year.
  • were absent on the day of moderation.
  • were registered for a subject at another school or centre i.e.: Art Centre.

3. OUTSTANDING MARKS (CANDIDATES WHO WERE ABSENT AND THOSE WITH NO SBA MARKS)
3.1 Refer to Assessment Management Minute 0014/2009 dated 24 July 2009 for information regarding candidates that have not fully satisfied the requirements for SBA.
3.2 Where a valid reason is provided, the candidate must be offered another opportunity to complete the SBA task. If the candidate cannot present himself/herself for a specific component of the SBA and the reason is acceptable, the candidate's SBA mark is then calculated based on the components completed. The maximum mark is calculated, excluding the component for which the candidate has been exempted.

EXAMPLE 1: VALID REASON

  Component 1 Component 2 Component 3 Component 4 Component 5 Total
Maximum marks 25 20 20 30 25 120
Learner's marks 12 Exempted 8 23 Exempted 43
Maximum marks for learner 25   20 30   75
SBA mark = (12 + 8 + 23)/75
= 43/75 x 100
= 57%

This final percentage must be converted to a mark out of 120 as follows:

SBA mark = 57/100 x 120
= 68

This mark (68/120) will be recorded on the SBA schedule.

3.3 Where no valid reason is presented, the candidate is awarded a zero for that component of SBA.

EXAMPLE 2: NO VALID REASON

  Component 1 Component 2 Component 3 Component 4 Component 5 Total
Maximum marks 25 20 20 30 25 120
Learner's marks 12 Not exempted 8 23 Not exempted 43
SBA mark = (12 + 0 + 8 + 23 + 0)/120
= 43/120

This mark (43/120) will be recorded on the SBA schedule

3.4 The following scenarios at completion of mark sheets (Annexure A) need to be emphasized.
3.4.1 Candidate completed no SBA components at all but a valid reason was provided - insert "999" on mark sheet. Evidence of valid reason(s) must be provided to the CA at the moderation session and forwarded to the Directorate: Examinations Administration.

IMPLICATIONS OF '999':

  • Candidate will receive an incomplete result (even though the other examination papers are written).
  • Candidate with '999' will be given 3 calendar months after the release of results to submit SBA marks. Failure to do so will result in the candidate having to repeat the entire subject.
3.4.2 Candidate completed no SBA components at all and NO valid reason was provided insert "444" on mark sheet. Such candidate will receive an incomplete result and must repeat the entire subject
3.4.3 In the case of an approved subject change that does not reflect on mark sheet insert '888' in 'mark' column. Complete Annexure B in respect of each subject.
3.4.4 Based on the above no mark between "000" and "005" will be accepted.

4. CANDIDATES WITH SPEECH AND/OR HEARING BARRIERS

Candidates with speech and/or hearing barriers must, in lieu of the oral mark, receive a pro rata mark based on the marks they scored in their written work for the June and September 2010 examinations

5. RESPONSIBILITY OF PRINCIPALS REGARDING COMPLETION OF MARK SHEETS

Principals must ensure that all National Senior Certificate candidates in their schools have been given the required SBA marks.

6. RETURN DATE

Assessment co-ordinators must ensure that the completed mark sheets reach the Directorate: Examinations Administration by 22 October 2010.

7. OUTSTANDING SBA MARKS

Principals are requested not to refer candidates without SBA marks directly to the Department after the release of the results. The correct procedure to approach the Department regarding outstanding SBA marks is via the CA at the relevant education district.
