THE PRINCIPAL

1. As you are aware, your school was nominated as one of 250 schools to participate in the first roll-out of the province-wide LitNum Intervention.
2. In 2009, your school was invited to select up to 8 teachers to attend Literacy training during the July 2009 holidays. This was followed by on-going school-based support and training for the rest of the teachers at your school.
3. This year your school will swop over to the Numeracy/Mathematics cycle. The training of champion teachers will take place over 5 days: 10, 11, 12 (Saturday), 14 and 15 June, thus ensuring minimum disruption to the school holiday period. (See Annexure A2 for the training venue.) Times: 8h00 to 16h30 daily, except 11 June 2010 - sessions end at 13h00 to accommodate the Opening Ceremony of Soccer World Cup. Daily registration from 7h30.
4. Your school is requested to nominate a further 8 teachers to attend Numeracy/Mathematics training on the following basis:

Foundation Phase: 1 x HOD, 1 x Grade 1 teacher, 1 x Grade 2 teacher, 1 x Grade 3 teacher;
Intermediate Phase: 1 x HOD, 1 x Grade 4 teacher, 1 x Grade 5 teacher, 1 x Grade 6 teacher. These teachers must be teaching Mathematics.
4.1 Small schools and schools with multigrade classes must choose according to the above categories within context.
4.2 Owing to the need to sustain the intervention, only teachers in permanent WCED posts can be considered. (See also point 7 below.)
5. Principals are requested to complete the attached registration form (Annexure B2) and return this by NO LATER than 14:00 on Friday, 26 March 2010 to the relevant district GET co-ordinator below:

6. A travel allowance will be paid on the following conditions:

  • Full course attendance is confirmed by the district GET co-ordinator and the signed attendance register.
  • The total distance travelled for the period exceeds 100 km.

Transport must, as far as possible, be shared. Where taxis are used, teachers should arrange a group pick-up at a central point.

7. This is a unique opportunity for the selected teachers to become Numeracy/Mathematics champions and leaders in your school. They will also be able to assist the service providers and the Department to contextualise training and support over the period of the intervention. This mutually beneficial relationship will enhance the teaching and learning of Numeracy/ Mathematics throughout the school.
8. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact your district GET co-ordinator.
9. The WCED looks forward to your school's participation in the LitNum Intervention. It is a positive response to the challenge that we face in raising literacy and numeracy levels in all schools, and in ensuring that all learners are able to read, write and calculate at the expected levels.
