FOUNDATIONS FOR LEARNING LESSON PLANS

1. In 2009 the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) commissioned a review of the curriculum to investigate problems being experienced in implementing the National Curriculum Statement. One of the recommendations of this review is the provision of standardised work schedules/lesson plans to all schools in order to improve teaching and learning.
2. In this regard, the DBE is currently delivering the following curriculum support material to every ordinary public school with Grades 1 to 6:
  • Foundations for Learning Foundation Phase Literacy Lesson Plans - Grades 1, 2 & 3
  • Foundations for Learning Foundation Phase Literacy Lesson Plans - Grades 1, 2 & 3
  • Foundations for Learning Foundation Phase Numeracy Lesson Plans - Grades 1, 2 & 3
  • Foundations for Learning Intermediate Phase Languages Lesson Plans - Grades 4, 5 & 6
  • Foundations for Learning Intermediate Phase Mathematics Lesson Plans - Grades 4, 5& 6

Each school will receive one set of the above support documents, presented in one lever arch file per grade. Each set contains lesson plans for Terms 1 and 2 only.

3. In addition, schools which have Grade R classes will also receive Foundations for Learning Grade R Resource Kit in the school's language of learning and teaching (LOLT). This material is presented in a box.
4. Schools are requested to ensure that
  • the consignment has arrived by the end of January 2010,
  • all the relevant documents have been included, and
  • the documents are in the LOLT of the school.
5. Schools are requested to report any non-delivery, shortages or incorrect language versions to the curriculum manager at their education district office, using the attached form (Annexure A).
