1. The lists of poems and short stories for all official languages to be studied in Grade 12 for the National Senior Certificate Examinations in 2011 - 2012 are attached as Appendixes 1 and 2.
2. The poetry and short story anthologies for Grade 12 were listed in 2008-2009 in the National Literature Catalogue for the eleven official South African languages.
3. Poetry forms part of the prescribed literature requirements for each of the official South African languages offered in Grade 12. The attached lists of poems (Appendix 1) will form one of three genres for literature study at Home Language level and one of the four genres for literature study at First Additional Language level.
4. Short stories also form part of the prescribed literature requirements at First Additional Language level. The attached lists of short stories (Appendix 2) for English and Afrikaans in Grade 12 form one of the four genres for study at First Additional Language level.
5. For this cycle, the national department has not prescribed a new list of short stories for the official African languages to be examined in the 2011 National Senior Certificate examinations. The status quo remains and schools are referred to the prescribed short stories listed in the National Department of Basic Education Circular S2 of 2009.
6. Kindly bring this information to the attention of teachers responsible for the teaching of languages to Grade 12 candidates.
