1. The Regulations Pertaining to the Conduct, Administration and Management of Assessment for the National Senior Certificate allow for candidates who have written the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, either as full-time or part-time candidates, and who did not meet the minimum requirements for the NSC, to repeat the examination(s) in one or more subjects.
2. The regulations further stipulate that such candidates must complete the qualification within a maximum period of 3 years, which must include the date of the first NSC examination written by the candidate.
3. There are two categories of candidates who will be repeating Grade 12 :
3.1 Candidates who are repeating Grade 12 on a full-time basis (attending school on a full-time basis);
3.2 Candidates who are repeating Grade 12 on a part-time basis.
4. Candidates who are repeating Grade 12 and attend school on a full-time basis must comply with all the requirements relating to candidates that are at school on a full-time basis, and may not be granted any exemptions or concessions. These requirements include the offering of seven subjects and the completion of school-based assessments (SBAs), orals, practicals and practical assessment tasks (PAT).
5. Requests to repeat the NSC examinations may be received from a part-time candidate in the following instances:
5.1 Candidates who passed the NSC examinations, but who want to improve the status of their qualification, i.e. attain access to a diploma or bachelor's degree course or meet the requirements for a specific occupation (Such a candidate will be allowed to register for a maximum of two (2) subjects);
5.2 Candidates who passed the NSC examinations, but who want to change a subject or subjects to meet the requirements for entrance to tertiary institutions (Such a candidate will be allowed to change a maximum of two (2) subjects. These candidates will have to fulfil all the requirements for the particular subject, including the applicable SBA and/or practical tasks for Grade 12).
5.3 Candidates who failed one or more subject(s) and who want to repeat certain subjects.
6. Candidates who wish to repeat a subject or subjects may request the WCED to carry over their SBA- and/or practical marks to the following year. This means that the candidates will not be required to submit any SBA tasks or complete the practical component of a practical subject. Such SBA- and practical marks are valid for 2 years after the completion of the first NSC examinations written by the candidates.
7. Should a candidate who is repeating wish to improve his or her SBA- or PAT marks, the candidate will be required to submit, to the school, the same tasks as all the other full-time NSC candidates in the subject(s) concerned.
8. The closing date for registration for the NSC examination for candidates who are repeating is 15 May of each year, provided that this day falls during the week. Should 15 May of a particular year fall on a weekend, the closing date in that year will be the Friday immediately before 15 May. Candidates can register at the WCED Client Services Centre, 2nd floor Grand Central Towers, Lower Plein Street, Cape Town. Candidates who are repeating and who have access to the Internet can register for the National Senior Certificate examinations online at http://exams.wcape.gov.za
