1. Below are the procedures that must be followed during the conducting of the final National Senior Certificate (NSC) practical examinations in the following subjects:

  1. Visual Arts

  2. Design

  3. Music
2. VISUAL ARTS AND DESIGN
2.1 The 2010 final practical examination question papers for Visual Arts and Design, i.e. Design Paper 2 (Practical) and Visual Arts Paper 2 (Practical), will each consist of the following two sections:

Section A: Sourcebook (or Workbook)

Section B: The Artwork

2.2 The practical examination question papers for Design and Visual Arts have already been delivered to the schools offering these subjects. The purpose of this early distribution of the question papers was to inform candidates about the research they need to undertake in order to answer Section A of each question paper. Candidates must have signed a register on receipt of the question papers.
2.3 During Term 3, candidates should have completed sufficient research and collated all appropriate material in readiness for Section A of these two examination question papers. Section A of each examination must be completed prior to the start of Section B of the practical examination.
2.4 Section B of these two examination papers must be completed between 13 September 2010 and the date of moderation at the examination venue and during the normal teaching time. It is suggested that block sessions of 4 - 6 hours be arranged over a number days, until all candidates have completed their artwork or the arts discipline required.
2.5 There must be strict invigilation by the Visual Arts and/or Design teacher during the conducting of the examinations.
2.6 The senior curriculum planner and the curriculum advisers will ensure that all practical work is marked and moderated promptly. The moderation dates have been finalised and communicated to all schools offering Visual Arts and Design.

3. MUSIC

The following procedure must be followed for Music Paper 2 (Music Comprehension):

3.1 The WCED will provide each school or examination centre with a compact disk (CD) in advance.
3.2 The CD will be packaged separately from the question paper for Music Paper 2.
3.3 The principal must acknowledge receipt of the CD and must keep the CD in a safe place.
3.4 Schools may not make copies of the CD and only the original CD may be used.
3.5 A week before the examination, the music teacher must, in the presence of the chief invigilator, test the CD and the sound equipment that will be used during the examination. All the tracks on the CD must be tested.
3.6 The music teacher and the chief invigilator must sign that they have opened and checked the CD.
3.7 If the CD is faulty, Mr Clive Berry, of the Directorate: Examinations Administration, must be informed immediately at tel. no. 021 467 2265.
3.8 On the day of the examination, the Music teacher must check the CD an hour before the commencement of the examination.
3.9 During the examination, each music track must be played the number of times specified in the question paper. Adequate time must be allowed between repeated tracks to allow candidates to write their answers before the next track is played.
3.10 Under no circumstances may the playing of a track be repeated at the request of candidates.
3.11 The CD player must be equipped with the batteries to ensure that the music extracts can be played in the event of a power failure.
3.12 A suitable room and sound equipment must be used to ensure good sound and acoustics.
3.13 This examination must be completed in 1½ hours.
3.14 All candidates must leave the examination room after the scheduled time has expired. No candidate may be allowed to leave before the scheduled time has expired.
3.15 The examination must be conducted in the presence of the chief invigilator.

4. Your co-operation will be much appreciated.
