1. In an effort to collect and analyse data on skills and qualifications of Maths, Science and Accounting educators in the system, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is embarking on the Maths, Science and Accounting educators' qualifications project (MSAP).
2. This project will ensure that the WCED has reliable information on which to make informed decisions regarding what strategies to apply and what interventions it would be appropriate to embark on to assist our educators to be better prepared for the challenges they face in schools.
3. Knowledge of the exact number of Maths, Science and Accounting educators in the system will also enable us to plan and forecast better for the future human resource needs of the education system in this province, to plan interventions and address possible gaps in personnel provision in these fields in the future.
4. This project has been necessitated by our awareness of the struggle that schools have to find qualified Mathematics, Science and Accounting educators.
5. The WCED will also share this data and our plans with other stakeholders in education, e.g. the provincial legislature's Standing Committee on Education.
6. All principals of schools with learners in Grade 8 to 12 are therefore requested to complete the form DHP MSAP 0001 for all educators on your staff, as on Friday 15 May 2009, who teach Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Science, Life Science, Agricultural Science, Information Technology and Accounting for Grade 8 and/or 9 and/or 10 and/or 11 and/or 12. This includes the permanent, contract, substitute and SGB educators.
