1. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is offering a limited number of scholarships to learners currently in Grade 6 to study at selected leading government and independent secondary schools from 2011 onwards. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and hostel fees. In addition, it includes allowances for travel, stationery, books, toiletries, school uniforms and civilian clothes, as well as other allowances.
2. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation selects learners based on their academic performance and involvement in extramural activities, with particular emphasis on financial need as a criterion. The applicants will have to undergo a vigorous selection process, which includes, among others, assessment tests and qualitative interviews with candidates and one of their parents/guardians.
3. In order to be eligible to apply, the learners must meet the following criteria:

  • South African, Grade 6 learner who shows exceptional ability and potential in Mathematics and English; and
  • Can clearly demonstrate financial need.
4. The four-step application process includes the following:

Step 1: Submit application

  • Applicants need to complete the 2009 Allan Gray Scholarship Application Form. The completed application forms must reach their office by Friday, 18 September 2009;

Step 2: Write assessment test

  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to write numeracy and literacy assessment tests at various assessment centres throughout the country;

Step 3: Face-to-face interview

  • Only short-listed applicants will be invited to face-to-face interviews. During this stage, each applicant is accompanied by one parent/guardian;

Step 4: Selection Camp

  • Only short-listed applicants will be invited to attend a one and a half day Selection Camp in either the Western Cape or Gauteng.
5. Only applicants who provide the following supporting documents with their applications will be eligible for selection:

  • Certified copy of birth certificate, ID or passport of learner;
  • Certified copy of ID of parent(s)/guardian(s);
  • Certified copy of Death Certificate(s) of parents, if applicable;
  • Certified copy of Grade 5 report;
  • Certified copy of Grade 6 report;
  • Certified copy of payslip(s) of parents, if applicable;
  • Original affidavit(s) if parent(s) is unemployed/housewife, stating reasons for unemployment;
  • Stamped and signed reference from educator;
  • Stamped and signed reference from a leader in the community.

Important Notification

Original, completed applications, together with ALL supporting documentation, must reach the offices of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation by no later than Friday, 18 September 2009. Incomplete, late, faxed and/or e-mailed applications will not be considered.
