1. The Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Campaign was launched in April 2008, with the aim of enabling 4,7 million South Africans to become literate and numerate in one of our eleven official languages by 2012. The aim is to enable these learners to read, write and calculate in their mother tongue at ABET Level 1 unit standards.
2. The Western Cape currently has 12 700 learners enrolled for the programme for 2009. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has a responsibility towards those learners who have successfully complete the programme and who wish to further equip themselves for employment. This can be done through our community learning centres, which offer ABET Levels 1 to 4. The WCED has undertaken to provide for the intake of 2500 Kha Ri Gude learners at CLCs in 2010.
3. Centre managers are therefore encouraged to market their centres to learners at Kha Ri Gude sites and to ensure Kha Ri Gude learners are accommodated at centres. The contact details of Kha Ri Gude supervisors are obtainable from the IMG managers (AET) at the district offices. These supervisors will be able to assist CLCs to contact Kha Ri Gude sites and learners.
4. Education district offices are kindly requested to monitor and support CLCs in this regard.
