The 5th of October 2009 is International Teachers' Day and also the first day of the 4th school term in the Western Cape. Please be advised that it will be a normal school day and that no school may be closed on that day under any circumstances.

The purpose of International Teachers' Day is, among others, to express appreciation and recognition for the work done by teachers. In view of this, there is a strong possibility that teachers' unions may request time-off to enhance the celebration of that day.

In the light of the obligation to ensure that quality education is maintained and, taking the purpose of the day into consideration, it is advisable that managers of institutions use their discretion in order to manage the situation should teachers be granted time-off.

The decision with regard to time-off on that particular day will be communicated to you via the normal communication processes (Education District Offices) in due course.
