1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is pleased to announce that funds in the form of a bursary are to be made available to teachers who wish to obtain the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE).
2. The following persons may apply:

  • Teachers permanently employed by the WCED;
  • Qualified teachers with at least an REQV 13 (M + 3);
  • Teachers who meet the admission requirements of the applicable university
    (See Annexure A);
  • Teachers who are not in receipt of another state bursary or any other bursary.
3. The aim of the courses is to improve teachers' qualifications, knowledge and professional practices in the course subjects offered.
4. These ACE courses will be offered on a part-time basis over a period of two years (from January 2010 to December 2011). Each course will lead to an NQF Level 6 qualification and will involve distance learning, as well as contact sessions during the week, weekends and holidays (See Annexure A)
5. Each bursary will cover registration and tuition fees and will be paid into the bank accounts of the higher education institutions concerned.
6. Accommodation, arranged by the contracted university or the WCED, will be provided for teachers from rural areas only.
7. Where applicable, transport costs to and from the training venue will be covered by the WCED, provided that teachers from the same town or school share transport.
8. Teachers are responsible for the cost of their learning support material, where applicable.
9. Teachers who wish to be considered for a course bursary are requested to complete Annexures B and C and submit them to the Department, via their school principals. Applications must reach the following address by no later than Friday, 16 October 2009:

10. Applications may also be posted into the box marked "Directorate: Internal Human Capital Development" in the main entrance foyer of the WCED Head Office at Grand Central Towers, Cape Town.
11. Application forms and agreement forms are attached to this minute. Copies of these forms are also available at the WCED's Client Services section on the second floor of Grand Central Towers, Cape Town.
12. Kindly note that:

  • incomplete or illegible applications will not be considered and;
  • no faxed applications will be accepted.
13. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
14. NOTE:

  • The name of the ACE course and the university of your choice must be clearly stated on the application form;
  • Applicants must also provide a second choice of ACE course and university on Annexure B;
  • Certified copies of your matric certificate, academic and/or professional qualifications certificate(s) and ID must be submitted with your application;
  • If you apply for more than one bursary, separate applications must be submitted.
15. The Bursary Committee will consider and prioritise all applications, and then make recommendations for the awarding of the bursaries.
16. Each successful applicant will be expected to enter into a formal agreement with the WCED to render a year's service for each year for which the bursary is awarded, as well as comply with the other stipulations outlined in the agreement.
