1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has pleasure in announcing that a limited number of bursaries have once again been made available to school learners and members of the public who wish to pursue a career in teaching and who intend enrolling at an institution of higher education for the 2010 academic year.
2. The following persons are eligible for consideration:
  • Grade 12 school learners or members of the public who meet the admission requirements of the university of their choice;
  • Grade 12 school learners or members of the public who are not in receipt of another state bursary or any other bursary.
3. The bursary will cover fees for registration, tuition, textbooks, learning material and accommodation in a students' residence.
4. The due date for all applications is Wednesday, 30 September 2009 and applications must be addressed to:

Applications may also be placed in the mailbox, marked "Pre-Service Bursaries, Directorate: Internal Human Capital Development", in the main entrance foyer of the WCED Head Office at Grand Central Towers, Lower Parliament Street, Cape Town.

5. Application forms are attached to this minute. Copies of these forms are also available at the WCED's Client Services section on the second floor of Grand Central Towers, Lower Parliament Street, Cape Town.
6. Kindly note the following regarding applications:
  • The name of the relevant course, e.g. B Ed (Foundation or Intermediate Phase), and the major subjects, in the case of Senior Phase (Grade 7 - 9) and FET (Grade10 - 12), must be clearly stated;
  • Should an applicant however wish to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B A), Bachelor of Commerce (B Com), Bachelor of Science (B Sc), or other relevant bachelor's degree, he or she is also required to register for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) to qualify for a bursary;
  • The university of the student's choice must be clearly indicated on the application form;
  • Certified copies of the following documents must be submitted with the application:
  • Applicant's mid-year results, in the case of Grade 12 learners or students currently at a university;
    • Applicant's matric certificate, and/or tertiary academic qualification certificate(s), if in possession of a tertiary qualification;
    • Applicant's identity document;
  • No incomplete, illegible or faxed applications will be considered;
  • Applications received after the due date will not be considered.
7. The Bursary Committee will, after careful consideration of all applications, make recommendations for the awarding of the bursaries to the successful applicants.
8. Each successful applicant will be required to enter into a formal agreement with the WCED to render a year's service as a teacher for each year for which the bursary was awarded, and to comply with the other conditions stipulated in the agreement.
