1. The purpose of this minute is to enable the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to manage claims regarding occupational injuries effectively.

2. Some of the most common problems encountered in the administration of claims regarding occupational injuries are the following:
  • The various fields on the prescribed forms are not filled in correctly and completely.
  • The occupational injury is not reported within the prescribed period (7 to 14 days).
  • Incidents are reported directly to the compensation commissioner without the intervention of the WCED (Employer).
3. The forms that must be completed in the case of an occupational injury are the following:
4. All the forms regarding occupational injuries, i.e. WCL.2, WCL.3, WCL.4 and WCL.5, are available from the Department of Labour or may be found on the website http://www.labour.gov.za. Please note that all documentation and records submitted to this office must be the originals. No faxes or copies will be accepted.

5. Directors and heads of educational institutions are requested to ensure that the contents of this minute are brought to the attention of all employees. Every employee must be requested to sign the document to indicate that he or she is familiar with its contents.
