1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch (US), is presenting the following writing competition for all learners in Grades 7, 9 and 12 who attend school within the boundaries of the WCED. The focus of the written work is on moral values and learners may write in their mother tongue.
2. Each entry must bear the full name of the learner, the school address, the learner's grade and topic.
3. Topics and categories
3.1 Grade 7: You are the principal of your school. Write an essay on what you would do to establish positive values among the learners of your school. (1 000 words)
3.2 Grade 9: In what ways can teachers and parents, as well as learners, be positive role models in today's society? (1 000 words)
3.3 Grade 12: Choose the five most important values which you think the youth should incorporate into their lives. Write an essay on how teachers, parents and the government can help them with this. (1000 words)
4. Prizes
First prize in each category:  R10 000
Second prize in each category: R 7 000
Third prize in each category:  R 3 000

The schools of the three category winners will receive R20 000 each.

5. Booklet

The ten best essays in each category will be taken up in a booklet. Each learner whose essay is published in the booklet - as well as every school in the WCED - will receive a free copy.

6. We hope this initiative will give us very insightful perspectives on this extremely important topic. Maybe some of these thoughts could even be implemented in schools!
