1. World Book Day is an annual event held on 23 April, William Shakespeare's date of birth, and is organised by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. World Book Day celebrations reflect the importance of reading for life-long learning, cognitive development and psychological well-being. The WCED encourages all schools to acknowledge the value of reading by participating enthusiastically in reading-based activities on World Book Day.
2. The theme for the day is: UNLOCK YOUR MIND, READ BOOKS.
3. The WCED will be celebrating along with strategic partners, such as the Publisher's Association of South Africa (PASA), South African Bookseller's Association (SABA), Department of Arts and Culture, the Western Cape Provincial Library Services and the Centre for the Book (a specialist unit of the National Library of South Africa):
3.1 PASA and SABA will embark on an outreach initiative whereby reading will be done at nominated schools across all provinces from 11-15 May, as elections will be taking place during the week of World Book Day.
3.2 The partnership has designed and printed a colourful poster depicting the spirit of World Book Day that will be made available for all schools and public libraries across the country. In the Western Cape, posters will be available from district resource centre staff. For the contact details of district resource centres, see paragraph 5 below.
3.3 Where districts do not have resource centres, they should contact the following persons to collect posters:

4. Attached is a list of suggested school activities, compiled by the staff of EDULIS (Education Library and Information Service), to mark World Book Day in a rewarding and an enjoyable way.
5. In the spirit of World Book Day, we encourage all schools to visit or contact one of the following persons to request block loans of books for use on World Book Day:

6. In the absence of a functioning resource centre at the Metro Central District Office and in response to numerous requests from educators at schools in that district, the decision was taken to establish a collection point at EDUMEDIA in Mowbray for school block loans borrowed from the EDULIS Library. This interim measure will be applicable until a resource centre has been established at the Metro Central District Office.
