Response to a need

Intermediate Phase teachers have requested further guidance on the standard of mathematics required in the Intermediate Phase. For this reason Intermediate Phase mathematics exemplar assessment tasks will be posted to all WCED schools and all available resources in mathematics have been placed on one CD. This CD will also be posted to primary schools. The material will support the implementation of the WCED work schedules and teachers' guides.

2.

Content

The support material consists of the following:

2.1 Books
  • Exemplar assessment tasks for Mathematics Grade 4;
  • Exemplar assessment tasks for Mathematics Grade 5;
  • Exemplar assessment tasks for Mathematics Grade 6;

The assessment tasks are in accordance with the WCED work schedules and teachers' guides and will be available in English and Afrikaans.

2.2

Compact disc

A CD with Intermediate Phase mathematics resource material. The CD contains:

  • The WCED Grades 4-6 work schedules;
  • The WCED Grade 4-6 teachers' guides;
  • Exemplar assessment tasks for Grades 4 to 6 (the same as 2.1. but in electronic format). The assessment tasks have been saved in 'PDF' and 'Word' format. Teachers can adapt or add to the Word documents. (Note: The format may change when you open the Word document on your computer, so check graphics, fractions, etc.)
  • Templates and worksheets. These can be used in the class or for homework;
  • Mental mathematics planning forms which cover the use of the flipbooks and the twelve mental maths strategies expounded in the Multi-grade Project;
  • Using computer-based programmes. This includes the exact activity in Cami, Robo etc. which supports the content of the WCED work schedules.

The CD material is available in English and Afrikaans.

3. Distribution
3.1 The CD will be distributed to all primary schools by the end of July 2009. If schools have not received the CD by the 31 July 2009, please send an e-mail to lymalan@pgwc.gov.za or send a fax, labelled Attention: L. Malan, to fax no. 021 467 2620 to inform the WCED that the material has not arrived.
3.2 Hard copies of the exemplar assessment tasks will be posted only to WCED primary schools. Afrikaans copies will be posted to schools early in the third term and English copies will reach the schools later. (Note: The material has been captured electronically on the CD.) Copies for independent schools and additional copies can be ordered through Edumedia (tel. no. 021 689 2641 or fax no. 021 685 7421).

4. Mediation and assistance

The mathematics curriculum adviser in each district can provide assistance to schools in the use of the CD and the exemplar assessment tasks.

5. Web access

By the end of July 2009, the material on the CD will also be available on the curriculum website at http://curriculum.pgwc.gov.za/site/121/page/view . Teachers who have additional material which will complement the WCED work schedules are kindly requested to send this information to Ms Lynette Malan at lymalan@pgwc.gov.za so that it can be added to the information on the website.

6. Suggestion

It is suggested that, in each school, a teacher introduce the CD to the mathematics teaching staff as a way of making this easy-to-use resource known. The WCED hopes that this CD will be a valuable resource for all Intermediate Phase teachers.
