1. National Science Week, an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, will take place during the period 1 to 8 August 2009. The theme for 2009 is "Tomorrow's science and technology are in our youth's hands".
2. The objectives of National Science Week, are to:

  • create awareness about the role of science in society;
  • improve learner performance and encourage study in science and mathematics; and
  • attract more learners into careers in science, engineering and technology.
3. Besides the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the following service providers have also been provided with grants to present activities for learners, teachers and the general public during National Science Week:

  • MTN Science Centre (Miss J Cleverdon, 021 529 8100);
  • Hermanus Magnetic Observatory (Mrs E Fraser, 028 312 2039);
  • Ithemba Labs (Miss G Stone, tel. 021 843 1000);
