1. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), in collaboration with the national Department of Education (DoE), has embarked upon a national campaign to educate learners to take up their right and their responsibility to register and vote as citizens of a democratic country by participating in the elections.
2. The IEC will be conducting training sessions with the Curriculum Advisers (Life Orientation) and Life Orientation teachers during weekends and after school during the first term of 2009.
3. The IEC fieldworkers will deliver posters and pamphlets to all high schools with information regarding the Voter Education Campaign for Elections 2009.
4. All teachers are requested to encourage learners to obtain their Identity Document (ID) as soon as possible and to register as voters during the last weekend of registration, which is 7 and 8 February 2009. In order to register, the learner must be a South African citizen; must be 16 years or older (but can vote only if 18 years and older); must be in possession of a South African green bar-coded ID or Temporary Identity Certificate; and, must provide a physical address where he or she is ordinarily resident.
